Can You Stand Up, Using Just One Leg?

Can You Stand Up, Using Just One Leg?

Following on John Gill’s amazing strength, reminded me of a party trick I can do. It’s a combination of strength and balance.

Sit flat on the floor with your legs in front of you. Using only one leg and without putting your hands on the floor, put your foot on the floor and stand up. The only part of your leg that can touch the floor is your foot. You can’t go onto a knee or anything like that and you can’t pull yourself up using your hands.

Give it a try right this minute!

There’s no trick to it, just put your foot down and stand up. I have not met anyone (yet) that can do it. Try each leg. It’s a tremendous exercise if you can do it more than once.

Can you touch your thumb alongside your forearm on the same arm simple just bend your hand 90 degrees and lay your thumb along your arm I can do it can you?

It can be done, I promise. I can do it with either leg.

As for the thumb, yes I can do that too. It seems the Shanahan’s were blessed with flexible thumb joints. I can only do it with my right thumb as the chisel hit the left and it’s a bit gammy.

Fran – What a crazy thing!! Can I join the elite club? I just did it three times using my right leg!! It might be a genetic thing, or because I spent several weeks last year strength training my legs for running. Unfortunately I am not strong enough to do it using my left leg. Who’s your personal trainer?! I need more strength training — Jim

Ahh yes Jim, I guess that explains your one Popeye-esque leg. Good work doing it though. At least Catherine has someone local to demonstrate.

I wandered onto this site while wondering the web unattended, a usual practice by easily bored people…

after marveling at the Neo-Cube, and avoiding a phone call from the ex boyfriend, i found YOUR short article.

I have a bad back and and due to a weakness in my right side I have strengthened my right leg by simply having to compensate.

I was able to do this, but had to bend the unweighted leg around infront of me and touch one hand to my bent knee. Does THAT count?

Then I dragged my 18 year old son into this and had him try to do it. He did. Like it was nothing at all. His girlfriend took a couple trys but got it quickly too.
